Choice of 2-1/2? or 3? Brick - Hardened With Special Facing
Weuse the finest quality 2-1/2? or 3? thick firebrick.The brick is coatedwith a proprietary reflective ceramic coating which penetrates, bindsand hardens the surface of the entire interior of the kiln. Thisreduces brick dusting. It increases brick life, operating efficiencyand uniformity. All Elements in Kiln Have the Same Resistance
Allelement resistance values are the same in each kiln. No need tocarefully match elements when replacing elements. Our multi-zonecontrol on both manual and automatic kilns makes this possible.
Elements are Evenly Coiled
Elementsare coiled on a special automatic machine that puts the proper spacingin the coil. Evenly spaced elements mean no hot spots and longerelement life. Replacement elements need very little stretching.
Standard or Optional Heavy- Duty Elements
Optionalheavy duty elements last longer under high fire and heavy useconditions. Heavy-duty elements use thicker wire and have a lower wattdensity (watts per square inch of element surface area). The lower thewatts density the cooler the elements can run and the longer they last.
Industrial Type Element Connections with Special Ceramic Blocks
Elementsare twisted around stainless steel screws mounted on solid ceramicterminal blocks. All contact between elements and wire lugs is over awide surface of heavily torqued stainless steel washers. Changingelements requires no special tools. The wire from cords is doubleinsulated with special high temperature sleeving to protect it fromheat.
UL / Canadian Listed
AllJupiter kilns including manual, automatic, 2-1/2? brick, 3? brick,single phase, three phase and those with powered bottoms are C-UL-uslisted. (See page 3). 480 and 380 volt kilns are not listed but aremade to National Electrical Code standards.

Easy to Move and Set Up
AllJupiter kilns are made of easy to lift 9? high sections which quicklyplug into the control panel. Each section has two handles.You canshrink the kiln size or increase it (depending on the control panel) byremoving or adding sections. (See hotkilns.com/section.pdf for moreinformation).
Standard Thermocouples are Heavy-Duty 8 Gauge
Thestandard thermocouples used for the JD Automatic kilns are exposed 8gauge Type K thermocouples which are fine for low-fire applications.Thermocouples are mounted away from the control panel. They are easy tochange. Element connection wire and all terminations are properlycalibrated for the thermocouples to keep them accurate.
Optional Industrial Mullite Protection Tubes
Industrialgrade mullite ceramic thermocouple protection tubes are recommendedwhen doing high fires above Cone 1 (around 2000oF).Tested to over 130Cone 10 firings. (See hotkilns.com/tc-protect.pdf).
Large 1? Diameter Peepholes with Solid Cast Ceramic Plugs
Youcan really see! Peepholes are a full one inch diameter and are nottapered.These large holes allow much greater visibility into the kilnthan is found in the tapered holes of most competitors? kilns. A solidcast ceramic insulating plug is included.The plug includes a steppedhead on the end to prevent heat loss from the peephole. It is not asfragile as the typical peephole plug used on competitors? kilns. Beingstraight makes them hard to fall out of the peephole.
Galvannealed Stand Features Full Support for Bottom
TheJupiter kiln stand has a full plate of reflective heavy 14 gaugegalvannealed steel under the bottom brick. This allows bottom brick tomove freely while expanding and contracting. It also provides bettersupport for the kiln so that cracked bottoms will no longer be aproblem. Multiple bends in stand tops and legs make stand extremelystrong. Legs include protective caps that allow the kiln to be slidover a smooth floor. The VENT-SURE collection box mounts directly tothe underside of the stand on four welded studs. The reflective surfaceunder the kiln improves energy efficiency.
?Easy-Open, Easy-Load? Hinge Design and Lid Support Allows Easy Access to Kiln
Thenew ?Easy-Open, Easy-Load? L&L hinge is counterbalanced with atorsion spring.This lightens the weight of the lid making it easy toopen and close. A lighter lid also reduces lid and kiln lip damage. Aplunger type safety latch holds the lid in place while it is open. Thelid, when open, is tilted away from the kiln opening allowing greateraccess to the interior. There are no lid supports in the way whenloading your kiln. You can safely and easily load from both sides.Anyone who has tried to load a large kiln with a lot of work can fullyappreciate this great feature. The hinge extends over three kilnsections and ties the kiln together for stability. This spring-loadedhinge design is standard for the 29? diameter models and optional forthe 23? diameter models (add $100). It is not available on the 18?diameter models. All kilns include supplemental safety chains that hookto a wall as a precaution against accidental lid dropping.
Corrosion Resistant Case Materials
Kilnscreate corrosive conditions from heat and fumes. L&L kilns arebuilt to last in this tough environment.The case is stainless steel.Screws are stainless steel. Galvannealed steel stand resists corrosionat high temperatures. Hinge is either powder-coated galvannealed (thespringloaded hinge) or stainless steel (the standard hinge).
Reversible Bottom
Thebottom can be very easily reversed in case of a firing mishap (exceptfor powered bottoms). Sectional construction makes this possible.
Three Adjustable Case Clamps per Section
Thestainless steel case of each kiln section is held together by threeadjustable stainless steel clamps. Behind the clamps the stainlesssteel case is reinforced with a piece of aluminized steel to preventdistortion. The clamps are easily accessible for adjustment.Two clampsare used on lids and bottoms.
Stainless Steel Clips Hold Lid Brick in Place
Somemanufacturers rely on the metal band around the kiln to hold the entireweight of the firebrick. L&L screws on several stainless steelclips that hold the firebrick in the band.
Optional Bottom Element
Bottomelements are available on all models except the J18 and J18X. Thisimproves heat up time and uniformity. It is recommended for heavy loads(such as dense loads of tiles) or where speed of heat up is important.Power is controlled on a separate zone.
Optional ?Pull-Apart? Kiln
Afew minor design changes make the Jupiter kilns easy to dismantle andreassemble to solve unusual loading problems such as firing highsculptures. We offer a new variation in our Jupiter line, which is meant just for those people
who definitely want to assembly and dissemble their kilns often. This option consists of not putting a hinge on
the kiln at all, having four handles on the top, and mounting the control panel on a floor stand like we do on the
DaVinci control panels. The sections are not tied together. We provide 45? long cords on all the sections.

Optional Unpowered 4-1/2? Sections
4-1/2?high unheated sections are available for slightly increasing kilnheight without adding power. These can adversely affect heat-up time,maximum temperature and temperature uniformity so we don?t normallyrecommend them but we do make them available.
Optional Powered VENT-SURE Kiln Vent
Ventfumes to outside. Vent collection box mounts on the stand (see photo ofstands) for downdraft effect and better uniformity. The vent blower ismounted on the wall rather than under the kiln to improve blower lifeand environmental safety.

Both Automatic & Manual Jupiters Feature Multi-Zone Design
Whetheryou order a manual or an automatic control, every Jupiter kiln ismulti-zoned. Each 9? section (and optional powered bottom) has its ownseparate contactor or manual infinite switch. In the case of the fouror five section automatic kilns the middle sections operate together asone zone. For automatic kilns the optional powered bottom is tied intothe bottom zone.However, the DynaTrol allows you to adjust how much ofthe bottom?s power is used (from 10% to 100%).
Detachable Panel With Protective Air Space
Thecontrol panel is mounted away from kiln heat with air space in betweenfor reliable operation. Control, contactors and sensitive componentslast longer. The control panel can easily be unplugged by anyone inminutes and sent to the factory service center for quick expert repairs(if ever necessary). The panel door is hinged and all wiring is neatlylaid out for easy maintenance.
Power Relays - Industrial Quality Wiring
Onall automatic Jupiter kilns and all larger manual kilns (all exceptJ18, J18X, J23 and J230 which use zone switches for power switching)power is switched to the elements with sealed power relays.Wiringconnections are positive to stable components. All wiring is neatlylaid out and tie-wrapped. The instrument panel is well-ventilated.
Branch Fusing included on High Powered Kilns
Each element circuit or zone is separately fused on kilns with more than 50 amps.
Control Panels and Kilns are Carefully Tested
Wedesigned our own special testing device to put each automatic controlthrough a rigorous test before it ships. We actually simulate varioustemperatures as we put a test program through its paces.We do a highvoltage pot test of each power circuit to test for shorts.We have a 28point quality control checklist.
Power Cord for Smaller Single Phase Kilns
A50 amp 6-50P six foot power cord is included for J18, J18X, J23, J23PBand J230 single phase models. All other models feature a direct hook-uppower terminal block.The NEMA plug configuration we use is shown.

Dynamic Zone Control
Dynamic Zone Control automatically controls a top, middle and bottomzone for accuracy better than 1/2 cone top to bottom. All our automaticsectional kilns feature this - not just a select few - and you pay nomore for this feature. .
On/Off Switch and Control Fuse
An On/Off switch turns power off to the kiln when not using it. Acontrol fuse protects the control circuit. Some automatic kilns don?thave these.
Optional Dawson Kiln Sitter/Timer for Back Up Safety
A Dawson kiln Sitter/Timer may be optionally ordered as a back upsafety device.This will shut off the kiln in the event of a controlmalfunction.
Optional 120 Volt Control Power with Noise Filter
Some people have unstable power grids with a lot of electrical noise.This option provides a separate 120 volt cord to supply power to thecontrol circuit.This goes through an EMF noise filter to reduceelectromagnetic noise to the control.You can plug this into a computerUPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) or other computer grade surgeprotector for further protection.
